Flights:
I flew with LATAM from Bogota, Colombia to Medellin, Colombia. The flight is 23 minutes in air and is officially the shortest flight I have even been on.
There are several affordable flight options depending on your budget, so refer to Expedia to see what deals they have.
Accommodation:
Really wasn’t needed for us. We flew in from Bogota, Colombia and flew back to Bogota the same day.
Mode of Transportation:
There is Uber in Colombia, so I will recommend using Uber especially from the airport. Uber is very cheap when you do the currency conversion from Pesos to U.S. dollars.
Once in the city, if you wish to try a cheaper mode of transportation, then you can try taking the metro. I tried using the metro and it costs less than a dollar. The metro is very easy to understand and use and very organized and clean.
Overall great experience on the metro.
The metro station also has Wi-Fi if needed.
Where to Eat:
I only had less than 24 hours in Medellin, Colombia, so I could only have two meals (breakfast, and dinner) but needless to say these locations are a 10/10 on both the aesthetics, and the taste of the food so I will highly recommend them.
- Cafe Noir:
I came across Cafe Noir on TikTok. I found a few videos of folks who had visited and were raving about the food, the decor, the service, and the aesthetics of good food and the interior decoration and design.
The moment I walked in, I was greeted by a very nice team, and they asked us where we wanted to sit, and they also gave us a chance to look around and take pictures and videos. Once seated, they brought us the menu.
I sat downstairs and you could literally hear the sound of the indoor waterfall they had set up at the back. This set the mode and was the premise for the best breakfast experience I was about to have with my friend.
We went through the menu and ordered a few items. They brought them out in a very timely manner. The set up was 10/10, food 9/10, and the ambiance and vibe 11/10.
I sat there for over 2 hours, savoring my food, and having great conversations with my friend. We took some quiet time to just relax and listen to the sound of the waterfall and it was a very surreal moment.
It was at this moment that I blotted out loud that “This is the life we dream of and the life I want to live and experience every day”. My friend busted out laughing because funny enough, she was just thinking about the same thing.
Great minds think alike.
- Gobe MDE
After a long day of exploring, it was time to look for some options for our final meal in Medellin, Colombia before we head back to the airport for our flight that was departing at night.
We checked TikTok and Google and we stumbled upon Gobe. It had really nice reviews on TikTok and a 4.8/5 review on google maps. I checked the images of the food and we decided to visit it.
We decided to take the metro there as it was about 18 minutes from our current location via public transportation.
It was in a very nice and quiet neighborhood; we walked and were greeted by the nice team. They asked if we had a reservation, we didn’t. They then showed us the 3 empty tables that had no reservations so we could decide where we wanted to sit.
Overall, my stay in Medellin, Colombia was amazing and very interesting. I had a great time; the people are so nice and welcoming.
My only challenge was the language barrier, and I felt so disappointed that I couldn’t understand them, and I couldn’t express myself as much as I wanted to. I wanted to engage in conversations with the people I met and interacted with, especially my Uber drivers, but I couldn’t and that was very disappointing.
The happiness and excitement I felt when one of my Uber drivers spoke English. I told him thank you for coming and I expressed how excited I was, and he was just smiling. We spoke for a bit on the ride, and he told us he was moving to Australia in 2 months for a new experience, and AHHHHHHHH.
I was so happy for him. He was born in Medellin, Colombia and had never left Colombia so this is all new to him. We wished him well and let him know we were proud of him, and it was just a very wholesome moment.
This is the reason I travel, meeting new people and hearing their stories; sharing their joy, struggles, accomplishments, and wins in life and it always warms my heart.
Thank you, Colombia, for this great experience, thank you for letting me enjoy your cities with you, thank you for sharing your culture with me.
I will be back.
What to do:
Medellin, Colombia is a very fun and vibrant city so if you have more time, I will say spend a few days in the city to explore, eat some good food, and visit some clubs or bars to learn and dance salsa.
Below is a list of the things I did in 24 hours and things I wanted to do but couldn’t because of time constraints and some other minor delays. You can review these, and plan better so you don’t make some of the mistakes I made.
1. Plaza de Botero:
Visit the plaza de Botero to see the artworks brought to life in the city. These are the artworks of Fernando Botero. Botero is from Colombia and is one of the most prominent artists to have come from the country. His signature style, also known as “Boterismo”, depicts people and figures in large, exaggerated volumes, which can represent political criticism or humor, depending on the piece, so be sure to stop by.
2. Comma 13:
This is a must visit in Medellin, Colombia. Comma 13 is you can do a free guided walking tour. These tours are free but be sure to tip at the end. The walk up is steep so wear some comfortable shoes and clothes. There are so many vendors around so you can do some shopping
Also stop by and admire the many graffities and take some pictures. Continue your walk up either by using the steps, or the escalator. Once at the top, enjoy the view of the city.
On your way to the top, there are performances, street vendors, bars, restaurants, so have fun.
3. Take the cable car to Parque Avi:
Now this was an activity I wanted to do but couldn’t because of time constraints and planning. We spent so much doing activity 1 and 4 and arrived late for the cable car due to traffic. We underestimated the amount of traffic on our way to take the cable car to Parque Avi and we got there when the last cable cars were leaving.
We got there at 5:30pm, and the cable car stopped running at 6:00pm. That means we can go to the top but there will be a cable car to bring us back down, so we didn’t go at all.
Parque Avi is a park at the top of the city where you can get a good view of the city of Medellin and definitely a must do, so plan accordingly.
4. Walk around and explore the street vendors for some great deals and bargains.
These stores, and street vendors are very close to the Plaza de Botero so you can make this the next item on your itinerary after visiting the Plaza.
Also, be careful not to spend too much time. There are so many vendors so it might get very overwhelming. I stopped by a few vendors and bought some graphic t-shirts at very good prices, and I am very satisfied with my purchases.
